Our Story
The Eastern Pwo Karen Unicode Team was established in 2025 following the decision by major platforms, such as Facebook, to discontinue automatic Zawgyi-to-Unicode conversion. This change is a significant benefit for us, as it allows our language to be read correctly on Facebook. Moving forward, we are continuing to expand the presence of our language across all digital platforms.
We are a non-profit, volunteer-led group dedicated to ensuring that Eastern Pwo Karen remains accessible and standardized. By building the essential digital infrastructure our language needs, we are ensuring it can thrive across all devices and platforms, both now and in the future.
We are a grassroots group of volunteers who are entirely self-funded. Without any outside financial support or sponsorship, we dedicate ourselves to this work driven purely by our devotion to our heritage and literature.
What We Are Developing
- Universal Keyboards: Native support for Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS devices.
- Typing Tutors: Interactive tools to help our community transition to the Unicode standard easily.
The Dictionary Mission
We are working to launch a comprehensive Eastern Pwo Karen Digital Dictionary. This is our biggest challenge: thousands of entries are currently trapped in PDF files and must be manually typed into Unicode text.
